procession of fire and water

Procession of fire and water was developed as part of the Festival Seni Candi at Sukuh Temple, a performance event commemorating the Javanese new year. A choreography collaboration with fire dancer Miriam Burke based around ideas of purification and renewal and set at a fifteenth century Hindu temple, I was struck by how superficial one year is when faced with this ancient site. How could I create something that would honor this place, which was far bigger than one year and far bigger than this audience? I decided to do the most mundane, human daily renewal ritual I could think of - I took a mandi, an Indonesian shower, on the front steps.
